Good

  • At 37 lm it is dim enough for a nursery or a light left on during night feeds
  • Red at 625 nm, well away from the wavelengths the body clock is most sensitive to
  • Two-year replacement warranty, the longest of the dedicated red bulbs here

Not so good

  • The Amazon listing contradicts itself on power (1 W in the title, 7 W in the bullets) and brightness (37 lm in the bullets, 595 lm in the specs table)
  • Too dim for reading
  • Not sold on Hooga's own site, so price and stock depend on the Amazon listing

This is the dimmest bulb on the list, which is exactly why it is here. Hooga’s Amazon listing describes a 625 nm red LED with “37 lumens of brightness” and “zero light from the blue light part of the spectrum”. At that output it works as a night light inside a normal lamp: enough to see a cot or find the door, not enough to read by.

The listing is not consistent, and you should know that before buying. The title says “1W LED, 7W Replacement”, the bullet points say “7W Energy-saving LED bulb” and 37 lm, and the specs table says 595 lumens. A 37 lm red bulb and a 595 lm red bulb are very different products. This page uses the 37 lm figure from the bullet points, but treat brightness as unconfirmed.

What it does badly: it is too dim for anything but night-time use, there is no spectrum or flicker data, and Hooga does not sell it on its own site. The price on Amazon moves around; check it before you buy.

How it compares: the Bon Charge red bulb is the brighter choice for a bedside lamp used for reading in the last hour before sleep. For hallways, the Twilight plug-in night light has a motion mode and adjustable brightness, so it is off when nobody is moving. Hooga’s own Circadian bulb is a better buy if you want one bulb for both evening and daytime use.

As with any light left on during sleep, keep it low and out of direct view. Expert guidance is to keep the sleeping room under 1 lux melanopic EDI at the eye.
