Good
- Rated at 700 lm, enough for reading, and the only fixed-colour bulb here with a believable rating that high
- States a specific blocked range (380 to 500 nm) and a peak wavelength, not just "blue-free"
- Cheaper per bulb than Bon Charge's equivalent bulbs
Not so good
- Non-dimmable, so you cannot turn it down closer to bedtime
- The spectrum report on the product page is an image with no lab name or data file
- Colours look strongly orange; not a bulb for tasks that need accurate colour
This is the bulb to buy if you want a whole room in warm amber light after dinner without it being too dim to read. BlockBlueLight rates it at 700 lm from 7 W, which it equates to a 60 W incandescent. That is far brighter than the red bulbs on this list, and it is the main reason it ranks first for evening lamps.
The spec sheet is more specific than most in this category. It lists an 1800K colour temperature, a 585 nm peak and “100% between 380-500nm” blocked. That range covers the 480 to 490 nm region the body clock is most sensitive to. The brand shows a spectrum graph on the page, but it is an image without a lab name, so treat the blocked range as a brand claim rather than an independent measurement.
What it does badly: it cannot be dimmed. In the evening, brightness matters as much as colour, so a single 700 lm bulb in a lamp near your eyes still adds a lot of light. Put it in a shaded lamp below eye level, or use it in a room you leave an hour before bed and switch to a red bulb or night light after that. The amber cast also makes colours hard to judge.
How it compares: the Bon Charge red bulb cuts further into the spectrum (blocking up to 580 nm) but is a pure red light that is harder to live with as a main lamp. If you want amber in the evening and normal white light in the day from the same socket, a tunable bulb such as the Philips Hue White Ambiance does both, at a higher price and with an app.
BlockBlueLight also sells a red Twilight bulb and a GU10 version of this bulb.
