Good

  • Works as a full bedside lamp, which WIRED's reviewer called her favorite for filling a bedroom
  • Warm white plus RGB LEDs, with Day, Reading and Night presets on the lamp
  • Sunset dimming for wind-down
  • Pairs with the Loftie Clock so light and sound alarms run together

Not so good

  • Sunrise lasts 9 minutes and starts at alarm time, far shorter than the 30-minute trial protocols
  • Alarms need the Loftie app and a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection
  • Sound needs a separate Loftie Clock, and the sunrise alarm does not snooze
  • $279.99, the most expensive clock here

If you searched for a Loftie alarm clock to wake you with light, start here: Loftie says the Loftie Clock is not a sunrise alarm. Its night light can switch on with your alarm, but the light-based wake-up lives in the Loftie Lamp.

The lamp’s sunrise works differently from every other clock on this page. Loftie’s support page says it begins at the alarm time, climbs from the base to the top of the column, and takes 9 minutes from start to finish, the length of a standard snooze. It does not snooze. With a Loftie Clock, the sunrise runs between the clock’s gentle first alarm and its get-up alarm. WIRED’s reviewer noted the same nine-minute brightening and dimming window and said it did not help her much.

That is the problem for anyone buying on the research. The sleep inertia trials started their dawns 30 minutes before waking, so the light reached sleepers while they were still asleep. A 9-minute ramp that starts at the alarm is closer to a lamp on a timer.

As a lamp it has more to offer. It mixes RGB and warm white LEDs, has Day, Reading and Night presets on its buttons plus more than 50 color gradients, and runs a sunset dimming mode. WIRED called it her favorite lamp for filling a bedroom. Setting alarms and custom colors needs the Loftie app and a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection, and WIRED notes you need a Loftie Clock for sound.

Buy it for the design or to complete a Loftie setup. For waking with light, the Philips HF3650 or Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 does the job for less.
