Good

  • $69.99 and widely sold, including on Amazon US
  • Four brightness levels and three color temperature settings
  • Countdown timer up to an hour
  • Thin enough to wall-mount or pack in a bag

Not so good

  • 10,000 lux is rated at 6 in; at the 12 to 24 in most people sit, output is lower
  • The whole lamp face is about 88 sq in, well under CET's 200 sq in target
  • No independent lux measurement found
  • Out of stock on verilux.com at last check; Amazon has it

At $69.99 the HappyLight Luxe is the cheapest pick here. You get a half-inch-thin LED panel with four brightness levels (2,500 to 10,000 lux), three color temperature settings from warm white to daylight, a countdown timer up to an hour in 5-minute steps, and a stand that comes off for wall mounting.

The catch is in the footnote. The manual rates the 10,000 lux figure as a photopic measurement at 6 inches. It also says the lamp can sit anywhere from 6 to 24 inches from your face, but light drops quickly with distance, so at a normal desk distance you get a fraction of the headline number. Yale’s light therapy group calls a 10,000 lux rating at 6 inches “not a feasible approach” for a 30-minute session.

Verilux does not publish the size of the light-emitting area, but the whole lamp face is 11.7 x 7.5 inches, about 88 square inches. That is well under the 200 square inches the Center for Environmental Therapeutics recommends, so small head movements take you out of the brightest zone. No independent lux measurement of the Luxe turned up in research for this page.

That does not make it useless. Used close, at a desk while you work, or for longer sessions at a lower intensity, it can deliver a meaningful dose. The cheapest way to know what you are getting is to measure at your eyes with a phone lux app or a lux meter, then adjust distance or time.

Verilux was sold out of the Luxe at last check, so the buy link goes to Amazon US. Bought direct, it comes with a 60-day refund for new, unused lamps; the three-year warranty covers purchases from Verilux or an authorized distributor. If you are treating diagnosed SAD rather than experimenting, the Carex Day-Light Sky is $70 more and measured at 11,000 lux from 12 inches.
