Good
- $39.99 for four 36 x 72 in shades, or $44.99 for four 48 in shades
- No tools, drilling or brackets; trim with a knife and stick on
- Cordless, raised and held with clips
Not so good
- Redi Shade claims 99%, not 100%, light blocking
- Paper, so it is a stopgap rather than a long-term window covering
- Redi Shade does not say whether a shade can be removed and re-stuck
Redi Shade has made these trim-and-stick paper shades since 1991, and they are one of the cheapest ways to darken several windows at once. A pack of four 36 x 72 in black shades was $39.99 when we checked, and four 48 in shades were $44.99. You trim the shade to width with a utility or kitchen knife, peel the backing and stick it in place, inside or outside the frame. Overlap two or more for wider windows.
Redi Shade says they block 99% of light. That is a vendor figure with no independent test behind it, and it is honestly worded: these are not marketed as total blackout. Expect some glow at the edges, and replace a shade once it tears.
The shades are cordless, so there is no cord loop around small children. You raise and lower them with the included clips. They are made in the USA from recyclable paper.
Use them as a fast fix in a new apartment, a nursery while you wait for proper blinds, or behind curtains for extra darkness. For a long-term fix, the IKEA FRIDANS roller blind costs more per window but is coated fabric, cordless and can be cut to width, though it mounts on brackets.
