Good
- IKEA says the fabric blocks all light, with no plastic-feel coating listed
- Each curtain is 57 in wide, wider than the 52 in panels most brands sell
- Heading tape works with a rod pocket, back tabs or hooks on a ceiling track
Not so good
- IKEA sells room darkening MAJGULL versions in some countries; check the product name says black-out
- Only two lengths, 84 and 98 in
- Up to 4% shrinkage when washed, per IKEA
MAJGULL is IKEA’s best-value soft blackout curtain. IKEA lists only 100% polyester as the material, with no coating, unlike its cheaper ROSENMANDEL, which has a block-out film on the back. IKEA still says the MAJGULL fabric “blocks out all light” and calls it suited to people who are sensitive to light during sleep. No independent measurement confirms it.
Two details make it good at closing gaps. Each curtain is 57 in wide, so a pair gives 114 in of fabric, and the heading tape lets you hang it from a rod pocket, from tabs, or on a ceiling track with gliders and hooks. A ceiling track mounted wider than the window is one of the simplest ways to stop light coming over the top and around the sides.
Read the product name carefully. In the US, IKEA sells MAJGULL black-out curtains in gray and dark green, but IKEA’s German site, for one, sells a dark gray-turquoise MAJGULL as room darkening curtains that let in “a small amount of daylight”. ROSENMANDEL has the same trap in the US, where the yellow/beige colour is room darkening only.
At about $45 for a 57 x 84 in pair and $50 for 98 in, MAJGULL costs a little more than the Sun Zero Oslo but gives you more width per panel. If you want the lowest IKEA price and do not mind a coated back, ROSENMANDEL is $24.99 for a 53 x 84 in pair. Wash cold on a durable-press cycle, do not tumble dry, and allow for up to 4% shrinkage, which matters if you have cut the length close to the floor.
