Specs from the manufacturer and the sources listed below. Last verified Oct 22, 2026.

Good

  • Incandescent light is warmer than the white LED in a normal monitor
  • Colour, 1440p and 100 Hz, unlike the monochrome reflective tablets
  • 3-year warranty on physical parts
  • Starlore version can be backlit by sunlight instead

Not so good

  • Incandescent light still contains some blue, and the monitor is bright; no spectrum or melanopic figure is published
  • Health claims such as 'augment memory retention' have no data, and the maker says to use it 'for experimental purposes only'
  • Bulky at 9.4 kg and 75 cm wide, with up to 250 W of bulbs making heat
  • Handmade in Mexico with a 5-week wait; Shwally's $1,100 listing does not say which model it covers

SpectrumView monitors replace the LED backlight of a normal LCD with incandescent bulbs. The Pro 27 uses ten 25 W bulbs behind a 27-inch 1440p VA panel that runs at 100 Hz. SpectrumView builds them by hand in Mexico and sells them through its own site for bitcoin, or through Shwally for card payments.

The idea is that incandescent light is closer to a fire or the evening sun than a white LED: warmer, continuous and without the blue peak of LED phosphors. It is also the only screen in this category with colour, high resolution and a fast refresh rate, so it can replace a normal monitor for any work.

The downsides are real. Incandescent light is warmer but not blue-free, and SpectrumView publishes no spectrum or melanopic figure, only graphs without numbers. A bright incandescent monitor at night can still be a lot of light, so keep the brightness low in the evening. The marketing claims benefits such as reduced inflammation and better memory with no data, while the maker itself says to use it “at your own risk, for experimental purposes only”.

It is also big, heavy and warm. At 9.4 kg and 75 cm wide, with up to 250 W of bulbs, it is nothing like a slim LED panel. Shwally lists the range from $1,100 without saying which model that price buys, so confirm the price for the Pro 27 before ordering. If you want a screen that adds no light at all, the Eazeye Monitor 2 is the reflective alternative.
