These are the two Philips wake-up lights most people choose between, and on light alone they are close.
Light
Philips rates the HF3520 at 300 lux with 20 brightness steps and the HF3650 at 310 lux with 25. Neither figure comes with a measuring distance, so keep either clock near your pillow. Both move from red through orange to yellow, and both cover the 30-minute ramp used in the dawn simulation trials. The HF3520 sets between 20 and 40 minutes; the HF3650 defaults to 30 and can be changed in the alarm menu.
What the extra $70 buys
The HF3650 adds RelaxBreathe, which pulses the light at one of seven breathing rhythms for wind-down. It has two more wake sounds plus three relaxation sounds, an AUX input and a phone charging port. Philips’ comparison chart says its alarm survives a power cut. The HF3520’s backup keeps only the clock time, for 4 to 8 hours.
Trade-offs
The HF3650 is bigger at about 8.8 inches tall, which crowds a small nightstand. The HF3520 is no longer sold on Philips’ US site, so you buy it through Amazon, where it has more than 14,000 ratings. Amazon’s review summary notes some owners find it complicated to program.
Which to buy
For most people, the HF3520 at about $107 gives nearly the same light as the HF3650 at $179.99. Pay for the HF3650 if you want the breathing wind-down, phone charging or a reliable alarm through power cuts. If you need a sunrise longer than 40 minutes, the Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 goes to 90.
